Tritonbrunnen

There are a couple of interesting monuments at Maxplatz in the city centre of Nuremburg including Tritonbrunnen (Triton Fountain) situated in the centre of the public square.It seems this is the only Baroque monument in the city and was the work of Johann Leonhard Bromig the Elder in 1689. The fountain is an imitation of Bernini's Fontana del Tritone at Piazza Barberini in Rome.What you see is a triton blowing upward into a conch shell. He situated within a giant conch shell that rests of a pedestal surrounded by dolphins. It is similar to what you see with the original Tritone fountain in Rome. However, this monument appears considerably more drab and in need of a bit of care.The triton and dolphins likely spout water into the basin fountain pool below. However, during our December visit, the fountain was not operational, like all other fountains we viewed in Nuremburg at this time. No doubt, this would be a much more appealing monument to see during warmer months of the year.
