Potsdamer Brücke

(WW2 HISTORY)Modern bridge across the Landwehr Canal, to the side of it are the red brick foundations of the older bridge that was badly damaged during WW2, I came here because of a true story of an event that happened here during the battle of Berlin in 1945. When Sergeant Nikolai Masalov (1921-2002) was fighting with his unit by the Potsdam bridge Berlin they were pinned down by heavy German machine gunners firing from buildings on the opposite bank of the Landwehr canal. The bridge was in the middle of the 2 opposing forces, on the German side of the bridge was a small 3 year old girl, terrified, alone and crying next to her mother who unfortunately had died of her wounds while crossing. Due to German propagander the mother would of been trying to get away from the Russians. Between lulls in the fighting the little girl could be heard screaming in terror and calling for her mother, after several minutes Masalov could stand it no longer and crawled across the bridge under fire to bring her back to safety just before an expected Russian artillery barrage. All attempts after the war to find the little girl failed and no one knows what became of her. The red brick foundation of the old bridge is all that's left to the side of the new one, so it's possible to stand at the exact spot where the small child was rescued. Really think they should put a small bronze statue of the little girl there as its such an amazing true story. Photos as it is today and added a little girl into a photo roughly where she was standing.

Die Brücke war wirklich langweilig und es kam zu einem Streit, als ich meine Käsekrainer auf der Brücke aß und ausrutschte, was dazu führte, dass ich mir fast den Daumen gebrochen hätte. Insgesamt war die Brücke eine sehr unangenehme Erfahrung.
