I did my entire cable installation myself. All I needed was the installation of some light switches, heater, oven, and finally the new fuse box. This dude came to see the place and to give a price. He told me the fuse box I had ready was no longer accepted by Berlin Stromnetz and that they have mandated a new box that costs €1800. That, plus the labour would cost me approximately €2800. Not knowing how this industry works, and after being unsuccessful with gathering better information, I accepted. But something was making me uncomfortable and on the day he came to install the items I googled the box he had brought. Every vendor who sold it was selling it for between €300 and €500. I confronted him with this information. He told me the box is in short supply and therefore expensive. I told him a %300 to %500 mark-up still didn’t make any sense. He tried to justify it by claiming that he’d have to buy individual fuses that would be €200 each. I googled the fuses he mentioned as well and they were maximum €20 each. I sent him away. Recently I spoke to a friend‘s electrician neighbour. He told me the more costly boxes were probably for more industrial settings but that was the €300-€500 range. He told me that wasn’t necessary for my apartment and itemized what I needed to buy. I went to Bauhaus and got EVERYTHING I NEEDED FOR €180. - INCLUDING THE FUSE BOX. Then I gave it all back because when the electrician friend saw the box I had at home - the one I had originally showed this fellow, he told me it was sufficient because it had all of the necessary parts in it already. So this guy was going to charge me €2800 when all I would normally need to pay would have been the few hundred for labour. Oh and I phoned Beelin Stromnetz and they did not know anything about any mandated fuse boxes. DO NOT HIRE THIS MAN!!!
